Improving Road Verges

Sandringham Estate is well-known for its avenues of trees and grass verges, which can be seen on entering the Estate from any direction.

The Estate is looking into ways to improve the presentation of the verges and further benefit wildlife and biodiversity in the surrounding areas.

On some verges, visitors to the Estate may notice a strip of longer grassland that remains unmown, which creates habitats for small mammals, wildflowers that attract insects, and cover for ground nesting birds.

Regular vehicle use can affect these verges, resulting in damage to the grassland. Over the coming weeks the Estate will be working on long-term improvements to these areas. Once the land has had time to recover, the areas will be back sown with grasses, shrubs, and trees where appropriate.
